Business Manager’s Report – April 2021

Business Manager’s Report – April 2021

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

As we sit early into 2021, we are excited for the many development projects on the horizon this year. The work picture is vastly improving with over 51 members being dispatched in the month of March alone, with many other upcoming projects on the way.

Presently we have 101 Journeypersons on the out of workbook

7 journeypersons working out of town (530 Sarnia)

5 journeypersons working in the USA

2 Apprentices out of work

NOTE: We have more than 100 members out of work. Last week, Comtrade put a call in for 1 Journeyman we ONLY had 5 bidders and Canem put a call in for 2 journeyman and we ONLY had 17 Bidders.

As for out of town calls, last week we had a call for 2 to Sarnia and we had 3 bidders.

Gordon Electric is aggressively going after Fanshawe Innovation Village; a $50 million total construction project. Black and Mac are bidding the new Can Line at Labatt’s and Tilco Electric is pursuing a 4 year multiple tower condo development at the old Vic hospital site. These are just a few of the projects that our contractors are bidding. While we cope with the Lockdown and the Pandemic, I hope all of our members and their families are safe and healthy. We are very pleased to have no positive covid cases to report from our members.

Jobs we currently have will start ramping up and we can expect a surge of job opportunities in the coming months. Maple Leaf will need an increase in manpower as the project moves along. The process bid packages for Maple Leaf are now out for tender, Gordon Electric has multiple jobs starting early spring and will also see an increase in manpower needs with the construction of the Amazon Distribution centre, Aspire (cricket plant) and the Quest Facility in Northeast London.

The pandemic and rotating lockdowns have affected the Local in unprecedented ways, but we have come through it stronger than ever. Thank you to all our members for remaining strong spirited and optimistic about the future. We can expect a successful year with many more projects to come as we chug along through these tumultuous times.

In solidarity,

John Gibson

Business Manager/Financial Secretary
